Professor Mariusz Kozak has published a new article titled “Feeling Meter: Kinesthetic Knowledge and the Case of Recent Progressive Metal” in the latest issue of the Journal of Music Theory. In the article, he explores the nature of headbanging (and fist-pumping) to the changing backbeat in progressive metal and the implications of movement for our conception of meter. Kozak argues that meter is a kind of knowledge about how music goes, or, more precisely, “a form of culturally situated bodily inquiry and discovery about the sonically afforded, reliably repeatable, and transferable possibilities for a particular kind of emotional and bodily affinity with members of a social group.”
The article can be read here.
Congratulations Mariusz!
