Professor Marcos Balter and Dr. Tyshawn Sorey (DMA 2017) have received 2022 Music Commissions from Koussevitzky Foundation from the Library of Congress. Along with 5 other winners, they compose pieces for performing organizations that will present the world premieres of each work. Professor Balter's piece is co-commissioned by the New York New Music Ensemble and will be for chamber ensemble with conductor. Dr. Sorey's piece will be for two percussionists and pianists of the group Yarn/Wire.
Serge Koussevitzky was the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. A champion of contemporary music, he played a vital role in the creation of new works by commissioning composers like Béla Bartók, Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravinsky. He established the Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress to continue his commitment to new music. The program is designed to pair established composers who have demonstrated considerable merit in their work with chamber groups that have a record of excellence in the world of contemporary music.
Congratulations Marcos and Tyshawn!
