Two Columbia Alumni Receive Awards at American Musicological Society Meeting

Mark Burford and Maria Sonevytsky

Columbia alumni Drs. Mark Burford (GSAS '05, Historical Musicology) and Maria Sonevytsky (GSAS '11, Ethnomusicology) have won awards at the AMS business meeting on November 8, 2020. Dr. Burford won the Otto Kinkeldey Award for his book Mahalia Jackson and the Black Gospel Field. He is currently the R.P. Wollenburg Professor of Music at Reed College, as well as the chair of the American Studies program. Dr. Sonevytsky won the Lewis Lockwood Award for her book Wild Music: Sound and Sovereignty in UkraineShe is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at UC Berkeley, having been an Assistant Professor of Music at Bard College from 2014-2018. Congratulations to the both of them!
