Professor Zosha Di Castri opened the BBC Proms on July 19th with her latest work Long Is the Journey - Short Is the Memory. The piece marked the 50th anniversary of the lunar landings.
"I was trying to get into the awe and wonder of what that felt like, so the choir's doing a lot of whispering, atmospheric sounds. The sopranos have a solo and the orchestra and rest of the chorus provides a textured soundscape. Time feels stretched out."
Conductor Karina Canellakis conducted the work, which examines how humanity's relationship with the moon has changed over time. This premiere was also the first time Di Castri's work had been played in the UK.
Congratulations, Zosha!
