Dr. Diane Urista was appointed to the Cleveland Institute of Music faculty of music theory in 2008. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance, cum laude, from Concordia College, a Master of Music degree in music theory from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in music theory from Columbia University. She is a certified Dalcroze Eurhythmics instructor and received her certification from Robert Abramson of The Juilliard School. Dr. Urista has published articles in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy and Music Theory Online. Her book Embodied Musicianship is under contract with Oxford University Press. She has presented at numerous international, national and regional conferences. Her research focuses on the symbiotic relationship between performance and analysis, aural skills pedagogy and embodied musical understanding. She is the recipient of many awards and fellowships, including the American Association of University Women and the Mellon Foundation. Before her CIM appointment, Dr. Urista was an assistant professor of music theory at the Oberlin Conservatory; she also taught music theory at New York University and music humanities at Columbia University.
