Gareth Cordery is a PhD candidate in Historical Musicology. His research broadly studies music pedagogy and gender in the nineteenth century under the guidance of Prof. Walter Frisch. His dissertation, provisionally titled "Gender, Mechanization, and the Étude: Discourses of Pedagogy in the Nineteenth Century” utilizes histories of education, medicine, and nationalism, as well as feminist cyborg theory, to understand the reception of the étude in mid-nineteenth-century France and Germany. Gareth has taught Music Humanities in Columbia's undergraduate core curriculum, for which he received the 2022-23 Core Preceptor Award for Teaching Excellence. He has published in the the Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research and presented at conferences in both the United States and Europe.

Gareth is committed to academic service and is a member of Columbia University’s Reaccreditation Steering Committee as well as a Provost’s Fellow with the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs. Gareth received his BA in Music and History from Middlebury College, where he completed a joint honors thesis that won Middlebury’s Graybar and Catton Prizes. He is also a concert pianist, having performed several concertos with orchestras across the United States.
