Born in London in 1984, Hannah Kendall is currently based in New York City as a Doctoral Fellow in composition at Columbia University. Her music has been widely celebrated, and in 2022, she was awarded the Hindemith Prize for outstanding contemporary composers, and nominated for an Ivor Novello Award. The New Statesman described Where is the chariot of fire? (2021) as “searingly impactful,” the San Francisco Chronicle praised Disillusioned Dreamer (2018) for having a “rich inner life,” and chamber opera The Knife of Dawn (2016) received critical acclaim for its involving and claustrophobic representation of the incarceration of Guyanese political activist Martin Carter. A new production was presented on the Royal Opera House’s main stage in 2020. Kendall has worked with ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, The Hallé, LA Phil, London Sinfonietta, London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. Festival appearances include the BBC Proms, Berliner Festspiele, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Grafenegg Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and Tanglewood Music Festival.
