As Associate Professor in the School of Music and Dance at the University of Arizona, Prof. Sturman teaches courses in ethnomusicology and general music and coordinates the School of Music's honors options. Active in professional societies, Dr. Sturman currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the College Music Society.She is the author of Zarzuela: Spanish Operetta, American Stage (U. Illinois Press, 2000). Research for that book initiated her interest in intercultural performance practice in music and theatre. Her other publications and research focus on Latin American and Southwest U.S. traditions and address the relationship between musical performance and ethnic identity, as well as the impact of technology and transnational economic policies on musical practice.Janet L. Sturman grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, the oldest of seven children, all of whom studied music at some point in their lives. She earned a Bachelor of Music at Wittenberg University in 1978, a Master of Arts in ethnomusicology in 1980 from Hunter College at the City University of New York, and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, in 1987 from Columbia University.Bio courtesy of her faculty page.
