 Max Schmeder was born and raised in the SF Bay Area. He studied harpsichord performance practice under Linda Burman-Hall at UC Santa Cruz. In 2014 he received a PhD in Musicology (concentration Music Theory) from Columbia. His dissertation on Beethoven's 'Diabelli' Variations, Op. 120 proposes that each movement comprises a miniature Hegelian Dialectic.
