Tom Fogg received his doctorate from Columbia in 2018; his dissertation, “Expérience sonores: Music in Postwar Paris and the Changing Sense of Sound,” explores the theories and methods of composer Pierre Schaeffer and otolaryngologist Alfred Tomatis, two early experimenters in electronic sound production working in Paris during and after the Second World War.

Before joining Columbia’s graduate program in historical musicology, Tom studied at King’s College London, where he received BMus (2004) and MMus (2007) degrees. At Columbia, Tom served as editor of journal Current Musicology. Since 2013, he has taught Music Humanities: Masterpieces of Western Music. Tom was previously a consultant at the university’s Writing Center. Tom has held the position of Core Lecturer at Columbia since Fall 2018.
