Professor Ellie Hisama will be the respondent for a presentation given by Dr. Lily E. Hirsch, titled “Anneliese Landau’s Life in Music: Nazi Germany to Émigré California.” Landau, a German Jew, overcame incredible obstacles to earn her doctorate in musicology in 1930. Narrowly escaping the Holocaust, Landau befriended and worked with many significant historical figures, among them Arnold Schoenberg, Bruno Walter, and Leo Baeck. Dr. Hirsch’s talk, and Dr. Hisama’s response, will cast light on an important, yet under-recognized, scholar.
