A lecture by Marilyn Nonken, introduced by Zosha Di Castri.
Nonken considers the foundational principles of the spectral attitude, examining the contributions of composer Hugues Dufourt in relation to his training as a philosopher. To come to terms with the philosophical scope of spectral music is to appreciate Dufourt's contributions and engage with a line of inquiry that has placed him, paradoxically, at a conspicuous distance from the movement he crucially defined.
Marilyn Nonken, author of The Spectral Piano: From Liszt, Scriabin, and Debussy to the Digital Age (Cambridge University Press, 2014), is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Piano Studies at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
Nonken has a PhD in Music Theory from Columbia's Department of Music. Zosha Di Castri is a Canadian composer/pianist and Francis Goelet Assistant Professor of Music at Columbia.
