Imaginary Anthropologies

A live performance and mockumentary by Gabriel Dharmoo

Nov. 21, 7:00 P.M.-8:30 P.M, Columbia Maison Francaise, East Gallery/Buell Hall. RSVP here.

French Canadian composer/vocalist Gabriel Dharmoo will give an intimate performance of his award winning Imaginary Anthropologies, floating in the space between satire and seriousnessWeaving his way in and out of characters while a video mockumentary runs concurrently, featuring “experts” who comment on the ancient vocal traditions he demonstrates, along with imaginary folklore – Dharmoo brilliantly highlights the amazing virtuosic and experimental possibilities of the human voice. The result is a humorous and disturbing exploration of post-colonialism, post-exoticism, cultural extinction, globalization, normalized racism, and cultural appropriation. (Best International Production at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2015)

Co-sponsored by the Maison Francaise, The Department of Music, and the Center for Ethnomusicology at Columbia University. Link to video trailer here.

In addition to the concert, he will be giving a talk about his music to the graduate composition seminar (for anyone interested) on Wed. Nov. 20th from 3:10-5pm in room 620 Dodge.
