The Department of Music at Columbia, with co-sponsorship from the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and the Beijing Culture and Arts Fund, is taking advantage of the extraordinary presence in New York City of a group of composers from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, to present a seminar at Columbia on new directions in Chinese contemporary music.

The seminar will take place on Thursday, December 12, from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, in Room 523 of Butler Library, centrally located on Columbia's Morningside Campus. The event will be co-hosted by Professors Georg Friedrich Haas and George Lewis of Columbia’s Department of Music, Head Librarian Elizabeth Davis of the Gabe M.Wiener Music and Arts Library, and Professor Weiya Hao, Dean of the Composition Department at the Central Conservatory, who was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Music at Columbia in 2014-15.

Five composers associated with the Central Conservatory of Music will present their work and take questions: Professor Ping Chang, Vice Dean of the Composition Department; and Professors Wenjing Guo, Jianping Tang, Guoping Jia, and Danbu Chen.

This cohort is part of a group of eight composers, also including Xiaogang Ye and Wenchen Qin, whose works will be performed on December 13, 2019, at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium:
