2023 Student Prizes for Composers — The Charles S. Miller Prize — Finola Merivale

The Department of Music is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 prizes for distinction in Music Composition, awarded annually to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate distinction in the area of Music Composition, as determined by a committee of faculty members in the Composition area.

The Charles S. Miller Prize (graduate)

Awarded annually to graduate students in the field of Music Composition who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have achieved distinction of the highest standard.

Awarded to Finola Merivale (DMA ’23)

Dr. Finola Merivale is a composer from Ireland living in New York City. She completed her DMA in Composition at Columbia University in April 2023 and her advisor was Professor George Lewis. Her dissertation piece, Out of the Ordinary/As an nGnách – a community opera in virtual reality – was commissioned by Irish National opera and won the 2021 Fedora Digital Prize. Her debut portrait album, Tús, was released in June 2022 to critical acclaim. She was recently named by The Washington Post as a composer to “watch in 2023.”
