May 16, 2023

The Department of Music is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 prizes for distinction in Music Composition, awarded annually to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate distinction in the area of Music Composition, as determined by a committee of faculty members in the Composition area.

The Charles S. Miller Prize (graduate)

Awarded annually to graduate students in the field of Music Composition who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have achieved distinction of the highest standard.

Awarded to Saad Haddad (DMA ’23)

Saad Haddad (b. 1992) is a composer that achieves a “remarkable fusion of idioms” (New York Times), most notably in his work exploring the disparate qualities inherent in Western art music and Middle Eastern musical tradition. Recent commissions include an orchestral work for the LA Philharmonic; a wind quintet for the Imani Winds; and a piano concerto for IRCAM and the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France. Dr. Haddad holds degrees from Columbia, Juilliard, and the University of Southern California. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and their two dogs, Ivy and Kala.
