Dr. Dawes's dissertation, "'Freedom Ain't Free': Race and Representation(s) in Extreme Heavy Metal," argues that Black musicians and fans' involvement in extreme metal is based on their view that extreme metal culture provides a space of greater freedom and flexibility from social norms, including those shaping ideas regarding race and gender.

Congratulations, Laina!
