Arya Roshanian is a PhD student in Historical Musicology with a certificate in Comparative Literature and Society. He holds an MFA in Writing from Columbia University and a BA in Music from University of Southern California.

His primary research focuses on style and aesthetics between music and literature. Specifically, he is interested in the mechanics of humor between Slavic writers and Russian and Soviet composers; Wagner’s and Schopenhauer’s effect on Russian writers of the Silver Age; and poetics in Soviet and Post-Soviet opera and song. He also studies vocality and literary influences in Italian opera of the primo ottocento.

Additionally, Arya enjoys a career as an essayist and critic. He regularly writes for the New York Times, and his bylines also appear in BOMB, 4Columns, Gawker, PAPER, Variety, and elsewhere.
