Undergraduate Program Admissions

The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music through Columbia College, the School of General Studies and Barnard College. We also offer a minor to students in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and a concentration for undergraduate students in the other three schools. The Music Major/Minor/Concentration is open to any prospective student with an interest in music, regardless of a prior musical background. The BA is Music is well rounded and includes courses in Ear-Training, Music Theory, Music History & Ethnomusicology. We also offer undergrad courses in Composition and Computer Music. Music does not offer any of the following:

  • Degree programs in performance.
  • Degree programs in music education.
  • Distance learning or online programs.

While a degree in music performance is not an option, there are opportunities to take lessons, participate in ensembles and play in the CU Orchestra, through the Music Performance Program.

First-year applicants can apply to Columbia College, Barnard College and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Transfer students can apply through the schools listed above or the School of General Studies (for returning and nontraditional students seeking a rigorous, traditional, Ivy League undergraduate degree full or part time). Applications are submitted through the Common Application, Coalition Application on Scoir or QuestBridge. The University offers early decision and regular decision applications.
