Sofia Jen Ouyang is committed to creating musical works that both expressively and critically engage with the world. Sofia is the winner of the BMI Composer Award (2023, 2024), 17th John Eaten Memorial Competition, Columbia University Douglas Moore Prize (2023), Juilliard Orchestra Competition (2023), and The American Prize (2022). Sofia is a Fromm Foundation Fellow at Composer's Conference, a recipient of the ARTZenter Composer Grant, a DeGaetano Institute fellow with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and a BluePrint fellow with National Sawdust. Sofia’s works has been performed at Lincoln Center, Frankfurt Oper, Arvo Pärt Center, Lucerne Festival, Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, and APAC Choir Festival, and she has collaborated with Ensemble Modern, JACK Quartet, Juilliard Orchestra, New York Virtuoso Singers, Riot Ensemble, and SF Contemporary Players. In addition, Sofia is the Music Director of Westside Chamber Players for the 2024-25 season, and Co-Artistic Director of Columbia University Bach Society for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Sofia is currently a doctoral candidate at Columbia University studying composition with Marcos Balter. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Music at Columbia University and studied composition with Andrew Norman and Amy Beth Kirsten at The Juilliard School.
