Columbia Sounds concert with Marilyn Nonken at Columbia Global Center in Paris

Marilyn Nonken, one of the most acclaimed pianists specializing in new music and the author of the important 2014 book The Spectral Piano, will give a recital at Columbia's Global Center Paris (Reid Hall, 4, Rue de Chevreuse, 75006 Paris) on September 22, 2016, at 8:00 pm. The program will feature music by Columbia-affiliated composers Christopher TrapaniTristan Murail, and Richard Carrick, as well as Charles Ives' Second Piano Sonata ("Concord"). The performance, which is co-presented by the Department of Music, the Columbia Global Center in Paris, and Columbia Undergraduate Programs in Paris, is part of the Columbia Sounds series featuring alumni, faculty, and students of the Department. 

Nonken, an alumna of Columbia's Ph.D. program in musicology, is Associate Professor and Director of Piano Studies at NYU's Steinhardt School. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Miller Theatre, the Guggenheim Museum, (Le) Poisson Rouge, and Roulette (New York), IRCAM and the Théâtre Bouffe du Nord (Paris), Jordan Hall (Boston), the ABC (Melbourne), Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano (Santiago), Music Gallery (Toronto), Rothko Chapel (Houston), the Phillips and Menil Collections, as well as in conservatories, universities, and festivals around the world. Highlights of recent seasons include performances of Hugues Dufourt's Erlkönig, Claude Vivier's Shiraz, and Tristan Murail's complete piano music, as well performances of Gerard Grisey's Vortex temporum with Sound Icon. Composers who have written for her include Richard Carrick, Michael Finnissy, Joshua Fineberg, Michael Kuehn, Liza Lim, Tristan Murail, Christopher Trapani, and Nina C. Young.
