Kieran Foss is a fourth-year PhD candidate in historical musicology. His doctoral research examines the reception of Neo-Platonist and Augustinian philosophy in late-medieval England as it pertains to cultural perceptions of music and musical practices. Kieran completed his MPHIL at Columbia in May 2026 and his MA in May 2025. He holds two further master’s degrees in musicology (MA - 2021) and vocal performance (MMUS - 2019) from the University of Victoria as well as a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance (BMUS - 2014) from the University of Ottawa. Kieran is the recipient of a doctoral fellowship from the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). He previously received an Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the same organization to support his MA-2021 thesis project, entitled “Wycliffite Music: Theological and Aesthetical Critiques of Compositional Practices within the Wycliffite Movement.” Kieran has presented his research at conferences in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Kieran is also an accomplished tenor, having worked in opera, musical theatre, and concert repertoire across Canada. He is an avid recitalist with a particular interest in German lieder. Kieran was the conductor of Collegium Musicum, Columbia's early music choir, for the 2025-2026 academic year.
