Kieran Foss is a second-year PhD student in Historical Musicology. His research takes an interdisciplinary approach to investigating the interfacing between gender and music in late-fourteenth- and early-fifteenth-century England. Kieran holds master’s degrees in vocal performance (MMUS) and musicology (MA) from the University of Victoria as well as a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance (BMUS) from the University of Ottawa. Kieran is the recipient of a doctoral fellowship from the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. He previously received an Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the same agency to support his MA thesis project, entitled “Wycliffite Music: Theological and Aesthetical Critiques of Compositional Practices within the Wycliffite Movement.” In summer 2024, Kieran presented his paper "Overlapping Semiotic Spectra: Music and Gender as Joint Signifiers in Wisdom" at the Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference in Granada, Spain. As well as being a musicologist, Kieran is an accomplished tenor, having worked in opera, musical theatre, and concert repertoire across Canada. He is also an avid recitalist with a particular interest in German lieder.
