The Department warmly congratulates Dr. Tom Smith, who on May 12, 2021 successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation in Historical Musicology entitled "Hearing with American Law: On Music as Evidence and Offense in the Age of Mass Incarceration." The dissertation was advised by George Lewis and the committee also included Ellie Hisama, Christopher Washburne, Sara Ramshaw, and Kendall Thomas.
