In February, Professor Giuseppe Gerbino organized a project to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Italian opera in the United States. Columbia News has published a profile of the event at The Italian Academy. At the event, Giuseppe Gibboni, an Italian violin player, played a 1734 Antonio Stradivari violin to a sold-out crowd. The performance heralds a 5-year initiative of scholarship, performances, and world premieres. The aims of the project and celebrations are to draw attention to the impact of Italian opera within America and to highlight its cross-cultural history.
