Leeman L. Perkins, 1932–2022

March 30, 2022

The Department of Music notes with sadness the passing of Professor Emeritus Leeman L. Perkins on Friday, March 25, just several days before what would have been his 90th birthday. Perkins joined the Columbia faculty in Historical Musicology in 1975 and taught in the Department of Music until his retirement in 2003. He served as department chair from 1985 to 1990 and is remembered fondly by many as a generous colleague and mentor.

Perkins was a renowned scholar of Renaissance Music. He edited the Mellon Chansonnier (Yale U. Press, 1979) and was the author of the richly detailed and authoritative Music in the Age of the Renaissance (W.W. Norton, 1999).

A memorial service for Prof. Perkins was held on April 9 at 1 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 840 Soldier Hill Rd., Emerson, NJ.
