Nina Fukuoka named one of the 2024-25 Hildegard Commission Winners

Nina is one of the five winners of the Hildegard Commission, which this year focuses on cinematic collaborations and writing music for film. Her name has been selected from over 97 submissions by a panel of acclaimed film composers who will now serve as mentors to the winners: Germaine Franco, Laura Karpman, Laura Rossi, Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum, Tamar-kali, and National Sawdust Artistic Director and Co-Founder Paola Prestini. Judges for the commission also included Angélica Negrón, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Jeffrey Zeigler. Hildegard commissions will be performed and recorded by the National Sawdust Ensemble at National Sawdust on March 6, 2025, as part of the organization’s 10th anniversary season.

Nina Fukuoka is a Japanese and Polish composer and performer based in NYC. She makes instrumental and computer music and uses various media and technologies to express extramusical meaning. Her works are focused on the contemporary world through the lens of horror esthetics, video games, and feminist scholarships. She has collaborated with ensembles such as Hashtag, Ekmeles, Distractfold, Mivos, Spółdzielnia Muzyczna, Talea, and ICE. Her works have been featured at numerous festivals and venues in Europe, North America, and Japan, including MATA, Warsaw Autumn, and the Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Nina is pursuing a doctorate in Music Composition at Columbia University.
