Ted Moore will be joining the Department as the new Interim Director of the Computer Music Center on July 1st. The outgoing director, Seth Cluett, will join the Contemporary Creative Practice faculty in the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University as Assistant Professor of Sound Media.
Ted Moore (he / him) is a composer, improviser, and intermedia artist whose work fuses sonic, visual, physical, and acoustic elements, often incorporating technology to create immersive, multidimensional experiences. His music has been presented at many festivals and cultural institutions, including MassMoCA, South by Southwest, and National Sawdust, and his sound art installations have been presented around the world, including at the American Academy in Rome and New York University.
Ted's work is enriched by computational thinking and digital tools, such as SuperCollider, Max, C++, openFrameworks, Python, and computer vision and machine learning algorithms. He codes custom software for composition and live performance. Ted's improvisational voice is rooted in free jazz, noise music, and musique concrète. He is a frequent improviser on electronics and works with dozens of instrumental collaborators.
After completing a PhD in Music Composition at the University of Chicago, Ted served as a postdoctoral Research Fellow in Creative Coding at the University of Huddersfield as part of the ERC-funded FluCoMa project, where he investigated the creative potential of machine learning algorithms and taught workshops on how artists can use machine learning in their creative music practice. Ted has continued offering workshops around the world on machine learning and creativity including at the University of Pennsylvania, Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, and Music Hackspace in London.
Congratulations, Ted and Seth!
