The Department of Music is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 prizes for distinction in Music Composition, awarded annually to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate distinction in the area of Music Composition, as determined by a committee of faculty members in the Composition area.

The Charles S. Miller Award (undergraduate)

Awarded annually to two graduating seniors who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have demonstrated excellence of the highest standard in the field of Music Composition.

Awarded to Daniel Weitz (CC '24)

Daniel Weitz (b. 2002) is a New York City-based musician — composer, performer, improviser, collaborator, etc… — whose works can be described as contemplative, theatrical, and narrative-driven. Throughout his works can be found a particular interest in the relationship between chaos and order, how one contorts and folds into the other, as well as the reproduction of everyday sounds leveraged to sonify narratives of destruction, collapse, and rebirth. Weitz’s work has been performed at festivals such as New Music on the Point and the Vienna Summer Music Festival, and by acclaimed ensembles such as PinkNOISE, ensemble PHACE, TAK ensemble, W4RP trio, DECODA, and the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Ensemble. This summer, he will be a featured composer in the Brasilia Orchestral Summit, and a composition fellow at Lake George Music Festival.
